According to the Cambridge English dictionary, to plan is to 'think about and decide what you are going to do or how you are going to do something.' A career plan details the actions to be done, decisions to be made and resources needed to achieve one's career goals.

These are the basic steps in developing a career plan :

1. Self-reflect

Clarify your purpose, values and passion. List down your passions, strength, skills and qualifications, as well as weaknesses.

2. Set your goals

Goals needs to be SMART, which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound.When setting goals, also consider other important factors including your lifestyle, family situation and the job prospects in those career fields.

3. Develop your career plan

Identify the specific actions and decisions that need to be accomplished. This includes identifying the skills and qualifications you need to acquire, the resources required, and the people who can lend you support.

4. Monitor your progress

Regularly track your progress versus what was planned, and update the plan when needed. Understanding why something is going well, or what causes a gap, is important to help make your plan smarter.
