Engineering students in the United States take the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the American College Testing (ACT) as entrance exams. Some of them may also be admitted because of the Advanced Placement (AP) course exams. These tests are the standard exams that undergraduate engineering programs use to determine the qualification of the applicants. They rely heavily on these entrance exams to select the best among them deemed prepared enough to engage in engineering programs, complete them successfully and graduate. These are the entrance exams most college students from all fields have to take in order to be admitted into college. Engineering schools in the U.S. do not have specific entrance exams that distinguish them from other schools.

Graduate students in engineering also take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as entrance exams. Like the undergraduate programs, the graduate engineering ones also do not have special entrance exams. They follow the same process as all graduate schools in the selection and admission of their candidates. Regardless of their degree level, engineering students are expected to have very good quantitative and analytical skills.
