Answer:

When they are being spoken about in a general, overarching sense, you will often hear medical and dental school referred to by those terms, as they denote a certain type of academic institution where medical and dental programs are being offered, and they will be easily understood by the general public when you use those broad terms. However, the kind of programs that are offered in each setting will vary, and you will often see them referred to in their abbreviated forms. For example, the two main programs at medical school are a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or a DO program, and a Doctor of Medicine, or an MD program. There are also different specializations that doctors can study once they have graduated from one of these two, and those will also carry their own abbreviations. In terms of dental school, there are also typically two different programs that dental students will enroll in. The first is the Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry, or DMD program, and then the second is the Doctor of Dental Surgery, or DDS program, and dentists, like medical doctors, can return to school afterwards and specialize in different areas too.
