Is RBT certification worth it?

Question:

Is RBT certification worth it?

Answer:

A Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is an entry-level certification in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis. An RBT typically works under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analysis (BCBA), and may work 1:1 with clients in multiple settings, including at the client's home, group home, in the community, or at school. It is most common for RBT's to work with clients with the diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, although they may also work with other groups. Certification is required when working directly with clients and when providing behavior-analytic services and occurs under the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). To become certified, the applicant must be at least 18 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent, pass a background check (typically through the organization they work for), obtain 40 supervised hours of training, pass a competency exam, and ultimately pass the RBT exam at a Pearson testing center. Becoming an RBT takes some time and investment, but most ABA companies are willing to pay for the RBT training. Once certified, RBT's will provide direct services to clients, commonly teaching replacement behaviors, adaptive living skills, self-help skills, and communication skills. It is a worthwhile certification if you love helping people learn new skills using evidence-based strategies and love working with people of all age groups and abilities.
