No, philosophy and ethics is not the same as religious studies. Philosophy majors focus on teaching students how to think critically, using logic and reason to better understand human beings and their world. Majors in religious studies focus on teaching students about the origins and purpose of the various beliefs and rituals found in religions around the world. Depending on the college or university, both majors usually require introductory classes in philosophy, ethics, and religion. But typically, this is the only common coursework between the two majors. Philosophy majors study the history of philosophy, while religious studies majors study the history of religion. Philosophy majors take classes that review how philosophy impacts the various parts of society, including law, politics, medicine, science, and economics, as well as issues such as racism, gender equality, and human sexuality. Religious studies majors take classes that review the different religions, including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, and Christianity. These classes consider the religious texts important to each religion and examine the different sects within each religion. In addition, religious studies majors take classes that explore how religion affects different parts of society as well as different groups within society, such as LGBTQs.
