Is EPA certification the same as HVAC certification?

An EPA certification is a type of HVAC certification but is not necessarily the same thing. There are also four different levels of EPA certification that can be acquired.

While HVAC certification is not required in all States, if a person wishes to work on devices that have refrigerants that could damage the ozone (such as HFCs) they are required to have an EPA certificate to ensure that the devices are being properly handled.

The type of device that can be worked on is determined by the level of certification that a person has. Type I allows for servicing of small appliances, Type II the servicing or disposal of high-pressure appliances that are not considered a small appliance or is a part of a motor vehicle, Type III allows for servicing or disposal of low-pressure appliances, and Universal certification covers every form of EPA certification. Each type of certification has its own exams that must be completed.

There are also a number of other HVAC certifications that can be acquired that don't deal with EPA, however, it is highly recommended that a person achieve EPA certification.
