Charles R. Drew University is not recognized by the US Department of Education as a Historically Black College or University (HBCU). However, it is recognized as a Historically Black Graduate Institution (HBGI) and as a minority-serving institution by the U.S. Office for Civil Rights. Currently, there are no recognized HBCUs in the state of California. The closest state with HBCUs would be Texas which has the following colleges and universities: Huston-Tillotson University (Austin), Jarvis Christian College (Hawkins), Paul Quinn College (Dallas), Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View), Southwestern Christian College (Terrell), St. Philip's College (San Antonio), Texas College (Tyler), Texas Southern University (Houston), and Wiley College (Marshall).

Here is a list of states/territories that have recognized HBCUs: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and US Virgin Islands.
