About Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ
In 1885, Arizona Territorial Normal School was established as the first institution of higher learning in the state. In 1958, the university's name was changed to Arizona State University (ASU). Today, this school serves as the academic home to over 72,000 students and delivers academic and research opportunities via four campuses.
U.S. News & World Report ranked Arizona State University 139th among the nation's top public universities in 2012. That same year, the Center for World-Class Universities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranked ASU 79th in its Academic Ranking of World Universities. Additionally, Washington Monthly magazine ranked ASU 45th in the nation in 2012 based on its contributions to the public good.
Academics
Arizona State University offered over 250 undergraduate programs and over 350 graduate degree options as of 2012. At the undergraduate level, the school offers bachelor's degree programs in areas ranging from architecture and biological sciences to engineering and pre-law. Special learning opportunities allow students to complete their degree via weekend and evening classes as well. Additional learning opportunities include teacher certification, ROTC (Army, Navy and Air Force) and study abroad programs.
ASU also offers distance-learning opportunities to students. Degree programs include about 33 bachelor's programs and roughly 29 master's options that can be completed entirely online. The university also offers a Doctor of Behavioral Health program that can be completed online in as few as 18 months with no dissertation requirements. A handful of online certificate programs are available as well.
Admissions
Individuals who apply to Arizona State University are evaluated on a number of factors, including prior academic achievement, overall GPA and SAT/ACT scores. The application process, including payment of a $50 application fee for Arizona residents and $65 for non-residents, must be completed no later than February 1 for admissions and scholarships. Those who apply after this date might receive admission consideration; however, priority is given to applicants who meet the deadline.
As of fall 2011, 79% of all undergraduate students who began their studies were 24 years of age or younger, and 86% of all undergraduates attended the university full-time. That same year, the four largest ethnic/racial groups at ASU were Caucasian (61%), Hispanic/Latino (19%), Asian (6%) and African-American (5%). The average high school GPA for first-time freshmen during the 2011 fall semester was 3.42, and 36% of students attending ASU at the time were first-generation college students.
Tuition & Financial Aid
The cost of attending Arizona State University depends on a number of variables, including degree level pursued, residency and living arrangements. As of the 2011-2012 school year, undergraduate tuition and fees at ASU were around $9,720 per academic year for Arizona residents and $22,319 per year for non-residents. Books and supplies were estimated to cost just over $1,200 for 2011-2012, and students living on campus were expected to spend about $11,436 on room and board.
ASU offers federal financial aid programs, such as loans, grants, tuition waivers and work-study opportunities. The average grant or scholarship aid awarded to undergraduate recipients during the 2010-2011 school year was $9,573, while the average student loan was $5,658 during the same period. This resulted in an average net price of $10,599 for in-state full-time beginning students in 2010-2011. About 89% of all university undergraduates received some form of financial aid in 2010-2011.
