A career in ophthalmology is prospective for those who are interested in medical field, and would like to specialize in matters related to the eyes. The main career options are as follows:

  • Ophthalmologist(private practice, or employment in hospitals, clinics, and medical offices)
  • Ophthalmic medical technologist(employment in hospitals, clinics, medical offices, as well as medical centers, and specializes in ophthalmic ultrasonography/photography/surgical assisting or low-vision optics)
  • Ophthalmic medical technician(works in the offices of physicians)

As per the May 2019 report of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the ophthalmic medical technicians had a mean annual wage of $38,760.

However, a medical degree(Doctor of Medicine) along with a successfully completed residency is required to work in an ophthalmology career.
