San Joaquin Valley College (SJVC) offers an online Clinical Medical Assisting and Clinical and Administrative Medical Assisting programs. A Medical/Clinical Assistant program may cost you about $18,000 on average. As a medical assistant you will complete administrative and clinical tasks, including to fill out insurance forms or code patients' medical information, or to undertake basic laboratory tests, dispose of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments.
To become one, you will need to complete a medical assisting program from a community college, vocational school, technical school, or university. This will take you about one year to complete a certificate or diploma, or about two years to complete an associate's degree (AAS). You can also complete relevant certifications such as Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) from the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). It is recommended to complete a training program accredited by either the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES).
