According to the Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Classes website, HVAC training from an accredited program can be completed in six months or up to two years depending on the state.

Some states will waive the training requirement for individuals with substantial experience or in cases where they have completed an apprenticeship. Apprenticeship programs can last three to five years and include a minimum of 2,000 hours on on-the-job training and 144 hours of technical education.

An individual can search the U.S. Department of Labor website for a list of apprenticeship schools in their area.

All prospective technicians must have successfully completed high school. Traditional classroom training can be completed at a trade school or a community college in most cases.

Additionally, many certification licenses and exams also require one to two years of practical experience.
