If you are interested in becoming a periodontist, you'll need to keep in mind that it will take you around 11 years to do so. As your first step, you will need to complete a bachelor's program that will prepare you for dental school. During your bachelor's program, you will have to take several science-based courses. These courses will provide you the necessary knowledge and skills to attend dental school. Once you get your bachelor's degree, you will be able to sit for the Dental Admission Test (DAT), which is one of the most important requirements for dental school. If you get a good score on the DAT, you will most likely get accepted into a good dental school. Getting a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Medicine in Dentistry/Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree generally takes four years to complete and involves classroom classes and clinical training. After receiving this degree, dentists that want to become periodontists will have to complete a three-year residency in periodontics.
