It can take many years of education and experience to become a network engineer. Network engineers or computer network architects are responsible for developing, building, and maintaining computer networks, servers, and software. Beyond developing and designing networks, network engineers may also be in charge of determining the proper equipment that is needed, as well as determining the necessary layout of the network, and what level of security may be needed. Depending on the company they work for, a network engineer may be a part of a larger IT department.

Most network engineers have at least a bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related field. Through these programs, prospective network engineers will learn the basics of the technology and systems they will eventually use in their careers. After graduating, prospective network engineers typically must gain at least five years of practical experience. Network engineers may also wish to pursue a graduate degree as well. In all, it may take at least five to ten years to become an established network engineer.
