The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) certificates are not given expiration dates, but ABIM will update its website with the status of its certified physicians annually on April 1st. This update will report whether physicians are actively participating in the ABIM maintenance of certification (MOC) program, as well as if the physician's certification is considered inactive due to no longer having a medical license in any state. The MOC program awards a certain number of points for activities in updating medical knowledge, patient safety, and practice assessment. The minimum amount of MOC necessary to be reported as participating in the program is by earning points in any activity every 2 years. In order to keep ABIM certification active, the physician must have earned 100 MOC points every 5 years. Physicians must also take and pass an MOC assessment to maintain active certification status. The deadline for this will vary according to regulations that were in place when physicians received their original certification, and can be found in an individual's ABIM physician portal.
