Answer:

There are two main organizations that provide medical billing and coding certification in the U.S. The American Medical Billing Association (AMBA) and the American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC). The AMBA grants the Certified Medical Reimbursement Specialist (CMRS) and the AAPC the Certified Professional Biller (CPB). In both cases, certifications are renewed by completing two steps. The first step is to pay an annual membership fee. The amount of the fee will vary depending on the organization. The second step is to accumulate Continuing Education (CE) credits. To renew the CMRS certification, you will need to gather 15 CE credits every year. And to renew the CPB certification you need to collect 36 CE credits every two years. Both organizations provide lists of accepted activities through accredited CE providers. If your certification is different from these two, you will need to contact your certification agency to know the renewal requirements. Nevertheless, they will be very similar to these.
