Answer:

A FHA loan lender must certify the DE underwriter and register them with HUD through the process of nomination.

Direct Endorsement (DE) underwriters work with Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan lenders to validate and certify that mortgage application documents are valid and meet FHA requirements so that the loan is endorsed with FHA insurance. The lender proceeds to certify the qualifications of DE underwriters and registers them with Human and Urban Development (HUD) by nomination. The process of becoming a DE underwriter is more challenging due to the changing FHA lending requirements.

Becoming a DE underwriter first begins with training schools. Take as many DE-related courses as possible and earn a certificate of completion for each course. Although the HUD does not mandate a certain number of course requirements or accredit any training schools, you will want to acquire enough DE knowledge to pass each lender's specific requirements, which can vary.

Apply for a DE underwriting job with employers looking to hire. Most mortgage brokerages do not qualify as an FHA lender so be sure that your employer is. Once you pass all of the employer's specific requirements, ask for a nomination to HUD as a DE certified underwriter.
