Getting a bachelor's degree in psychology will not allow you to work as a psychiatrist, but it is a good first step. To become a psychiatrist, you will need to go through medical school and get your Medical Doctor (MD) degree. But before this, you will need to get at least a bachelor's degree. Even though you can get a bachelor's degree in almost any field to apply for medical school, it is required that your undergraduate program offers the necessary courses to do this. Most medical schools require candidates to have complete a year or two of chemistry, biology, and physics. As a result, if you are a psychology major and want to pursue a career as a psychiatrist, you will need to make sure that you are taking these necessary courses. Once you complete medical school, which takes four years, you will have to complete a residency in psychiatry. This takes four more years to complete.
