How do I renew my American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) certification?

Answer:

Renewal of the ANCC certification must be done every 5 years, and the application may be completed up to one year before the expiration date. Certification may be renewed online or through the mail, and both options may be accessed through ANCC's website.

To renew, 75 continuing education hours (CH) are required in the certificate's specialty, as well as in at least one of the following 8 categories:

  • Continuing education hours (75 in the certification specialty)
  • Academic credits
  • Presentations
  • Evidence-based practice, quality improvement project, publication, or research
  • Preceptor hours
  • Professional service
  • Practice hours
  • Assessment (exam or portfolio)

In addition to this, APRNs (advanced practice registered nurses) need 25 CH in pharmacotherapeutics as part of the 75. Renewal applicants must also hold an active RN (registered nurse) license and pay the application fee (currently $125 as of July 2020).
