Teaching assistant certification is referred to as paraprofessional certification in New York City. Applicants must apply to the New York State Education Department for one of the teaching assistant certifications. The entry-level of most teaching assistants is Level I. The Level I certificate is valid for three years, with the possibility of renewal for three additional years in order to meet the experience requirement for the Level II teaching assistant certificate.

Level I certificates require:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent degree
  • Successfully complete the New York State Teacher Certification Exam
  • Completion of three required workshops
  • Background check

Teaching assistants may increase their Level I and Level II certificates to advanced statuses with earned college credits. College students enrolled in a teacher education program within the state of New York are eligible for a Pre-Professional Teaching Assistant Certificate. In New York City, full-time teacher assistants must have prior employment as a substitute teacher assistant among other hiring requirements.
