First, applicants need to be at least 18 years of age, earned a high school diploma or equivalency, be proficient in English at a level required to perform the job, and live or work in New York State at least 51 percent of the year. Training experiences including 6000 hours of supervised, full-time equivalent work experience in an approved setting, as well as completing education and training consisting of a minimum of 350 clock hours. In addition, applicants need to complete a criminal background check and pass the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium, Inc. (IC&RC) examination for Alcohol and Drug Counselors (ADC).
