As a substance abuse counselor, you will provide treatment and advise people who suffer from alcoholism, drug addiction, or other mental or behavioral problems, with the possibility to work in mental health centers, community health centers, prisons, or private practice. You may help clients rebuild professional relationships or reestablish their career. You may also help them improve their personal relationships, including to discuss their addiction or other problems with family and friends.
The following are the two levels of certification in Virginia for Substance Abuse Counselors:
- The Certified Substance Abuse Counselor Assistant (CSAC-A): You will need a High School Diploma or GED. However, a Bachelor's degree in Addiction Counseling is recommended. You will also need to complete 220 hours of didactic training and 180 hours of experiential training, etc.
- The Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC): You will need to meet all requirements for the CSAC-A as indicated above, a Bachelor's of Substance Abuse Counseling degree, 2,000 hours of supervised work experience, 100 hours of direct face-to-face supervision, etc.
