Question:
How do I become a guidance counselor with an elementary education degree?

Answer:
In the U.S., school counselors, also known as guidance counselors, are required to hold a master's degree to practice this occupation. Therefore, after you get your elementary education degree, you will have to attend a master's program in school counseling. These programs generally take two years to complete and include both classroom classes and supervised clinical experience. It is important to mention that you can major in almost any field to become a school counselor. Of course, you will need to make sure that you take the necessary prerequisite courses to apply for a master's program in school counseling. After you get your master's degree, you will be eligible for a school counseling license in your state. In all states of the U.S., school counselors are required to get a license to be able to work as such. Getting this license usually requires completing an internship or practicum and passing an examination.
