To become a baseball historian, one must be very good at reading and love the history of baseball. More specifically, the pathway for a successful baseball historian career includes a master's degree and a PhD in history with a specialization in the history of baseball.

In addition to these degrees, a baseball historian will also be better off with work experience in the world of baseball. They are encouraged to work and volunteer through their education as a means to build their base of experience, continually qualifying themselves to be the "know-alls" of baseball and its history.

A PhD is optional for baseball historians, but credibility is seen as companies recognize that the individual is an expert, and that they likely know more than anyone else because of their extensive study. More success will be found with the highest degree of education offered.

The current official baseball historian is John Thorn, who earned his degrees from Beloit College. He not only gave an extensive amount of time to his studies back in the day, but he continues to write books and educate the public on the both known and unknown facts of the game.
