Answer:

To obtain a National Certified Counselor (NCC) certification, a candidate must first earn a master's degree (or doctorate) from a regionally accredited university, specifically in counseling. There are requirements within your undergraduate and master's studies that must be met, including specific regular coursework, supervised field experience, and enrollment in a professional orientation to counseling course. No other major area of study is accepted for the NCC. Additionally after graduating, you must complete 3,000 hours of counseling experience and 100 hours of supervision during a two-year time period. This can be voided if you attend a CACREP (The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs) accredited program. You must then pass either the National Counselor Examination or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination, and receive endorsement from a professional within the mental health field. The exam fee for the NCC is $375 with exam registration (or $250 without registration).

It is important to note that while the NCC is board certified nationally, most states require state licensure in order for you to be allowed to practice.
