GPA is very important in the admissions process, as are the accompanying GMAT or GRE test scores. The GPA from your prior bachelor's or other master's degrees give the admissions office a strong indication of your ability and commitment to finishing the MBA program. For ongoing student eligibility after being admitted, your GPA determines whether you are allowed to complete the MBA program. There's a common saying about grades in graduate programs; Only A's and B's are given as grades in graduate level classes. The implication is that if a student can't maintain grades above a C, they shouldn't be in a graduate level degree program. Generally, if a student gets a C, they are put on academic probation. If the student can't improve their grades, they will be dropped from the program.

There is an expectation in graduate degree programs that the attending student are above average students. This is directly tied to the pedigree and perceived value of the degree. Graduate degrees are intended for students that want to excel in their field of study, not just merely continue classes in the field.
