Yes, the certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) will expire after seven years if you do not complete all of the required United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Steps or components of the Steps. According to the ECFMG, once you take a USMLE Step, the seven-year period begins on that Step exam date. From that exam date, you will have a maximum of seven years to complete the remaining Steps or Step components. You must earn passing results of all of the USMLE Steps for ECFMG Certification. Once ECFMG certification is awarded, you can apply to Match for a residency. After one to two years of residency, you can take the USMLE Step 3 exam to become a licensed physician in the United States.
