In most jurisdictions, intravenous injections (IV) are out of the scope of a medical assistant's duties, and they are not allowed to start or disconnect an IV nor administer medication or anesthetics intravenously. However, because the scope of duties for medical assistants is set at the state level, the scope of a medical assistant's duties is broader in some states and may extend to IV insertion. Examples of such states include Washington and Maryland, where a certified medical assistant is permitted to administer an IV under the direct visual supervision of a practitioner.
In comparison to nurses or physician assistants, the scope of a medical assistant's clinical duties is limited to primarily non-invasive procedures, such as taking vitals or collecting samples for testing, all performed under the supervision of a physician. Medical assistants may also assist in a variety of administrative tasks, like bookkeeping and setting up an exam room for diagnostic tests.
