Question:

Do English majors learn grammar?

Perfect School Search

Answer:

Yes, English majors learn grammar. Most students come out of high school with at least a working knowledge of English grammar, even if they may not be able to define a participle off the top of their heads. English majors learn even more about English grammar and syntax in a variety of ways. Some students will take grammar courses as part of their degree programs, but more commonly English majors will be required to take composition courses that focus on strengthening academic writing skills generally. These courses are usually taught by English professors who specialize in writing and/or writing pedagogy. Students will focus on learning parts of speech, grammar rules, and conventions, and working on writing different types of essays and papers in these courses. Beyond composition and introductory courses, however, every English class that involves writing (and that will be all of them) means that students will practice using grammar, and all professors can identify and help correct grammar errors in student work.
