Can you major in biology without taking chemistry courses?

Since chemistry courses are fundamental to a biology major, it is not possible to undertake a biology major without studying chemistry. The basic courses in chemistry that biology majors must take include theoretical and laboratory courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry.

Other basic courses in a biology major that necessitate the knowledge and study of chemistry are- molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, protein biology, enzymology, neuroscience, etc. Some specialized courses that require a foundation in chemistry are bioremediation, industrial microbiology and biotechnology, and others.

Hence, it is evident that a biology major cannot be completed without taking certain fundamental chemistry courses. Moreover, these courses in chemistry are also vital to understanding other courses, like biochemistry, molecular biology, protein biology, etc.

However, the number of chemistry courses that one must take for a biology major, can vary not only depending on the program and university, but also on the type of degree one opts for. For example, a biology major offered by a Bachelor of Arts degree would require less science-intensive coursework, most of which can include courses in biology, with few courses in chemistry, physics and mathematics.
