Even though it is recommended to major in accounting to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), an economics degree might help you to pursue a career as a CPA. A business degree can also enable you to become a CPA. The requirements to become a CPA can vary across states; however, there are some common requirements in the U.S. The first step is to complete 150 semester hours of college coursework. These semester hours have to be related to accounting. It is important that you know your state's requirements before choosing a major. Even though your economics major can offer some required coursework to become a CPA, you might have to take some extra classes to earn this certification. For example, it is important that you take coursework related to taxation, auditing, accounting ethics, financial accounting, management, etc. After you complete your education, you will have to take and pass the Uniform CPA Examination. Some states might also require you to complete a certain amount of work experience.
