Sonographers are not medical doctors. In the U.S., medical doctors have to get a bachelor's degree and then attend medical school to earn a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree. In total, doctors have to spend at least 8 years in college before undergoing a residency in a medical specialty. On the other hand, to become a sonographer, aspirants can get a certificate or diploma, an associate's degree, or a bachelor's degree. The most common option to pursue a career in sonography is an associate's degree program, which takes two years to complete. All of these programs include both classroom classes and clinical experience. If you want to undergo one of these programs, you should choose one that is Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)-accredited. Accredited programs provide the best education and training possible. Besides, if you complete an accredited program, you will be eligible for an American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers certification.
