Programs leading to careers in building codes may be offered at technical schools, colleges and universities. List of Building Code Classes
Introduction to Inspection Course
This course provides an introduction to the basics of working in the building inspection field with an examination of building codes, terminology, construction plans and inspections. The introductory course is among the first courses taken toward a building inspection technology degree.
International Building Code Course
Students examine building classification and fire protection systems, as well as regulations worldwide to classify buildings as safe. This advanced inspection course provides a thorough examination of the current year's international building codes, height limitations, structural strength requirements and occupancy regulations.
Legal Aspects of Codes Course
Students studying building degree technology learn the basics of the authority that building inspectors have, as well as the laws regarding negligence and liabilities. Students may look at case studies of legal practices in the courtroom.
Plumbing Codes Course
In this course, students learn the terminology, components and tools used in plumbing. This course provides an overview of inspecting plumbing and looking at blueprints. Students often use this course toward a plumbing program or a building inspection technology program.
Property Maintenance Codes Course
Students planning to work with residential and commercial properties study the penalties that can be enforced upon property owners if buildings are not brought up to code. Students examine what codes must be followed to ensure the safety of occupants. This course can be taken any time during a program.
Code Official Administration Course
Students learn government agency office administration through the study of human resources, budgeting, record keeping and other office duties. Using case studies and scenarios, students practice communication and managerial skills. This course focuses on problem solving, inter-office relationships and laws. This course is taken near the end of a program.
