Arizona State University

In addition to offering biomedical engineering degrees at the bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels, ASU provides highly achieving students with the opportunity to work on a bachelor's degree and master's degree concurrently through the Accelerated 4+1 program. These four degree programs make up the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering, which is grouped with ASU's other engineering schools under the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering. ASU's School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering programs are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering

This program aims to prepare students to enter the field as professionals or to enroll in a graduate degree or professional-level certificate program. The entire program consists of 120 credits, 45 of which must be upper-division courses. A minimum GPA of 2.0 must be maintained throughout the entire program. Students can expect to take classes in general biology and chemistry, human anatomy and physiology, biomechanics and biomedical instrumentation, among several other scientific courses. All students are also required to take the university's general studies awareness courses, which focus on diversity and global and historical awareness. Freshman, transfer and international students have slightly different requirements for entering the program, though a 3.0 GPA and a minimum SAT combined score of 1140 are required of all prospective students.

Accelerated 4+1 Degree (BSE+MS) in Biomedical Engineering

This program offers ASU's top undergraduates the opportunity to earn a bachelor's and master's degree in biomedical engineering in only five years. Students can share and reserve certain courses taken as a part of the bachelor's degree to the master's degree. A total of 12 credits can be used in this way, though a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher must be achieved prior to sharing or reserving any classes. To be accepted into the program, interested students must have completed 75 credits of coursework related to biomedical engineering and have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Once the requirements are met, prospective students must meet with an adviser to discuss applying to the program. The coursework for this program is the same as that for the standalone bachelor's and master's degree programs.

Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering

The master's degree program offers six specialized areas of study for students to choose from, including biomaterials; biomedical imaging; molecular, cellular and tissue engineering; neural and rehabilitation engineering; and synthetic and systems biology. Students also can choose a thesis or non-thesis track to complete their studies. The non-thesis track allows students to complete an applied project course in lieu of the thesis. All master's degree students are required to take several biomedical engineering core courses, a seminar course and mathematical electives. Applicants must submit official GRE scores, a resume or curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation in addition to the graduate application and other general ASU admission requirements.

Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering

ASU's doctoral degree program is similar to the master's program but is much more research intensive. Students can choose from among the same areas of study as the master's program. Doctoral students are required to complete 84 credits of coursework, written and oral comprehensive exams, a prospectus and a dissertation. All students are required to take core courses in modeling for molecular/cellular engineering, modeling and simulation of physiological systems and scientific communications, as well as technical electives, dissertation courses and a biomedical engineering seminar. Additional course requirements are also needed for specific areas of study. All of the admission requirements listed for the master's program are also applicable to the doctoral program.
