Essential Information
Students interested in biomedical engineering technology can find a handful of educational opportunities in Washington. Although the following associate's degree options are not specifically biomedical engineering technology but, rather, biomedical equipment technology programs, the training students receive in these programs can prepare them for the same career paths. The three Washington-based programs below may include laboratory experiences as well as externships.
Bates Technical College
Students in Tacoma can find an associate degree program in biomedical equipment service that trains them to repair medical imaging equipment, heart monitors and electric wheelchairs. Students take courses like blood-borne pathogens, applied math, capacitors and medical equipment research. Additionally, this program offers students an opportunity to replace a course with work-based learning opportunities. The program consists of 118 credits and can be finished in seven academic quarters.
North Seattle College
Seattle students can pursue an associate degree in healthcare equipment technology at North Seattle College. This program is designed to train students to repair and maintain medical equipment. The curriculum includes courses that cover medical terminology, analog and digital circuits and microprocessor fundamentals. Students also get to complete an externship that provides professional experience.
Spokane Community College
Spokane Community College also offers an associate degree program in biomedical equipment technology. Students are trained to maintain and repair biomedical electronics at a variety of locations within the medical electronics industry. Students take theoretical courses in conjunction with lab experiences that offer practical training. Some of the courses in the curriculum include chemistry, physiology and hospital ethics. The program also covers preventative maintenance and the technical repair of biomedical equipment.
