Information about Bethpage

Bethpage is a hamlet in Nassau County, New York, with a population of around 16,5600 people, based on 2020 U.S. Census Bureau figures. The hamlet is part of the town of Oyster Bay, a larger community that provides municipal services and has a population of nearly 300,000 as of 2021. The racial makeup of Bethpage is predominantly white, with less than 10 percent of residents identifying as Asian, African-American or American Indian and Alaska Native. Bethpage is a relatively affluent area, with a median household income of $115,413 per year (based on 2016-2020 U.S. Census figures) compared to a median of $71,117 for all New York residents. The median value of owner-occupied housing units for 2016-2020 was $497,400, also much higher than the statewide median.

Bethpage State Park offers indoor tennis facilities, hiking, bike trails and a polo field. The hamlet gained recognition during the 1960s and 1970s for being the longtime home for the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, producers of the Apollo Lunar Module. Although it is a census-designated place and has no legal status as a city, Bethpage has a modern public library and its own school district. The hamlet is also home to Old Bethpage Restoration Village, where visitors witness reenactments of life on Long Island during the 1600-1700s.

Higher Education

As a suburb of New York City, Bethpage is within an hour's drive of such world-famous institutions of higher learning as New York University, Columbia University, the Juilliard School, Barnard College and Fordham University. Closer to home, Long Island-area cities host such colleges and universities as the State University of New York Institute of Technology, Hofstra University and Long Island University.

Employment and Economic

Per 2014 census estimates, those employed in utilities earned a median annual wage of $101,250. Those employed in public administration had earned $82,569, while those employed in construction had earned $81,389. The Cablevision Systems Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, is based out of the Grumman Corporation's former headquarters. Many Bethpage residents commute to Manhattan, where several banking, finance, advertising and media corporations are headquartered.
