Maryland University of Integrative Health
The Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH) is a small, private school that for almost 40 years has specialized in alternative medicine and holistic therapy programs, such as acupuncture, herbal studies, and wellness coaching. MUIH, formerly known as the Tai Sophia Institute, offers a master's degree and post-master's certificate program for those interested in learning an integrated, holistic approach to nutrition and health. Students gain an understanding of the principles and theory of nutrition and wellness that take into account the roles of psychology, society, and physiology in the preparation and consumption of food.
Master of Science in Nutrition and Integrative Health
The program in holistic nutrition is a 29-credit course of study that can be completed in two years of intensive part-time study. Students will also be required to choose from three areas of concentration. The human clinical nutrition area of concentration includes 16 additional credits and five credits of elective coursework. The community nutrition education concentration requires 19 credits and two elective credits, while the herbal medicine area of concentration requires 29 additional credits.
The curriculum trains prospective nutritionists in areas of holistic wellness, human heath, and sustainable home agriculture, as well as weight management, community health, and whole cooking practices. Course topics include wellness physiology, therapeutic diets, macronutrients, and life-cycle nutrition. In addition, students are given a background in biochemistry, applied sciences, and practitioner skills that prepare them for working directly with clients or collaboratively with other healthcare professionals.
Post-Master's Certificate in Nutrition and Integrative Health
The online post-master's certificate program, intended for licensed health care professionals, consists of 11 credits of core foundation coursework and four elective credits. Program content focuses on nutritional biochemistry, human nutrition and macronutrients, biochemical assessment, nutritional assessment of clients, and therapeutic diets. Elective choices cover topics such as whole foods cooking, sports nutrition, diabetes education, food systems, and food policies. Students that successfully complete the program are prepared to seek national certification through the American Clinical Board of Nutrition.
