Austin, the state capital of 'the Lone Star State,' is southwest of Dallas and 160 miles west of Houston. Situated on the Colorado River, Austin has a population of 964,177, as of 2021 U.S. Census estimates. The median household income for residents, from 2016-2020, was $75,752, and 53.4% of residents 25 or older have earned at least a bachelor's degree. Based on 2021 census data, 33.3% of residents are Hispanic, almost 69.4% are white alone and 7.7% are Asian.

Austin has an active music scene, which includes 250 live music venues and a variety of festivals that take place throughout the year. Some popular festivals include South by Southwest, Austin City Limits, and Urban Music Festival.

Other attractions include Barton Springs Pool, Lake Austin, Lady Bird Lake and the large urban bat colony located under the Congress Avenue Bridge. The climate in Austin is mild. Temperatures may see 50 degrees in January, whereas summer days are frequently over 90 degrees.

Educational Options

Austin has about 40 postsecondary institutions, including career schools, theological seminaries, technical institutes, community colleges and universities.

The University of Texas at Austin is the largest school in the city with around 51,900 students. Located in downtown Austin, this university is ranked 38th among national universities in 2022, according to U.S. News & World Report. Students can choose from programs available through 17 colleges and schools at UT and have access to 1,100 student organizations.

Austin Community College District offers more than 100 programs to its over 35,600 students. This school has 11 campuses throughout the city. Other schools include Saint Edward's University, Austin Graduate School of Theology and Huston-Tillotson University.

Economy and Industry Info

Known as the Silicon Hills, Austin supports a large electronics industry that produces goods such as computers, peripherals, semiconductors, and software. Numerous technology companies have a presence here, including 3M, Google, Cisco Systems, Intel Corporation, Silicon Laboratories and Oracle. Major employers in the city include Dell, IBM Corporation, Seton Healthcare, and UT Austin.
