About Auburn University

Auburn University (AU) was founded in 1856 in Auburn, which is in eastern Alabama near the Georgia border. AU is a large, public university with the designation of being a land, sea and space grant institution. In 2012, U.S. News and World Report ranked AU in a tie for 89th among all national universities and included AU in its inaugural Top Online Education Program Honor Roll.

Academics

Auburn University offers over 140 undergraduate degree programs, master's programs in over 64 academic areas and doctoral degree programs in over 40 fields of study. Auburn's 13 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges include the College of Agriculture; the College of Architecture, Design & Construction; the College of Business; the College of Education; the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering; the School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences; and the College of Veterinary Medicine. Undergraduates with exceptional academic performance may enroll in Auburn's University Honors College.

In 2010, business administration and management, biology, and finance were the top majors for undergraduate students.

Students at Auburn University have the opportunity to study over 200 programs in more than 30 countries around the world. AU also offers students the opportunity to serve their country by participating in one of the three U.S. military ROTC programs at the university.

Admissions

Auburn University accepts undergraduate applications for admission by October 1st for early action. Regular decision applications are processed in three rounds. First round deadline is November 1st, second round deadline is December 1st, and third round deadline is February 1st. Applications can be submitted online. Early action applicants are notified of their admission status by October 15th and regular decision applicants by November 15th for the first round; December 15th for the second round; and February 15th for the third round. Prospective freshman students must submit high school transcripts and SAT or ACT scores.

Transfer student application deadlines are June 1st for fall admission, October 1st for spring admission, and May 1st for summer admission. Students considered as freshman transfers should have completed at least 12 semester hours of college course work, but less than 30 semester hours. All transfer students should have a minimum 2.5 GPA. Freshman transfers must include high school and college transcripts, a Transfer Plan of Study form, and SAT or ACT scores. Regular transfer students (those with 30 or more semester hours completed) only need to include college transcripts with their application.

Prospective graduate students may apply online and should be prepared to submit college transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and graduate test scores. They should consult departmental websites for specific admission requirements and application deadlines.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The tuition for undergraduate students for the 2012-2013 academic year is $9,446 for Alabama residents and $25,190 for non-Alabama residents. Room and board is $10,606 per year, and AU estimates that students will spend about $1,100 a year for books and supplies. Graduate students pay $9,440 per year as Alabama residents and $25,172 if they are not Alabama residents. Additionally, there are professional fees associated with some undergraduate and graduate programs.

Undergraduate financial aid packages may include grants, university or outside scholarships, university student employment, federal work-study funding and federal student loans. Auburn University also offers merit and need-based scholarships.

Graduate student funding options are dependent upon the graduate program. Aid options available to graduate students include university scholarships, fellowships, teaching and research assistantships, external scholarships and awards, federal work-study and federal student loans.
