Athletic business managers are concerned with business operations in the world of athletics, which involves planning and preparing budgets, participating in public outreach and negotiating contracts. They also might create excitement and anticipation around a team or a player through the development of marketing and advertising campaigns.

Job Duties

Athletic business managers promote athletes or entire athletic organizations and ensure that all financial aspects run smoothly. Depending on whom they represent, their job duties can vary greatly.

When managing the career of an individual athlete, athletic business managers negotiate contracts and other business opportunities that maximize the benefit to their clients. They also might be responsible for coordinating marketing, promotional engagements and travel. Additionally, they work with their clients to create and maintain career strategies.

Business managers also might handle the day-to-day business and financial operations of an entire athletic team or department, including managing travel, budgets and payroll. In this role, they ensure that the team or department follows any regulations or guidelines established by the organization. Additional job duties might include assisting with fundraising and managing events.


A bachelor's degree with a concentration in business, accounting or sports administration usually is a basic requirement to start a job as an athletic business manager. Often, a master's degree or extensive experience is preferred.

Additional requirements might include exceptional communication abilities, financial management capabilities, and organizational and time management skills. An applicant also must be thoroughly familiar with athletics and business management and have an interest in the sport they'll be managing.

Salary Info and Job Outlook

In May 2020, the BLS reported that professionals in the 90th percentile or higher earned $190,500 or more per year, whereas the bottom 10th percentile earned $35,840 or less per year. The BLS also projected that employment of such business managers and agents would grow much faster than the national average through 2029.

Though a master's degree is preferred by some employers, a bachelor's degree will stand out just enough to get you a job as an athletic business manager. Jobs should be competitive during the 2019-2029 decade.
