Essential Information
Bachelor's degree programs in integrative health may include coursework or concentrations in aromatherapy. Programs in this field place an emphasis on establishing a relationship between the body, the spirit and the mind. Some courses may require that students complete fieldwork in certain homeopathic areas of study.
Master's degree programs in aromatherapy can be found, though they're rare. These graduate programs can sometimes be found online.
Bachelor's Degree in Integrative Health Studies
Much like other bachelor's degree programs, students will have to complete a number of general education courses. The remaining classes are made up of courses in integrative medicine and electives in a major area of study, if offered. Some possible classes include:
- Foot reflexology
- Energy healing
- Acupressure
- Intro to herbal medicine
- Essential oils
Master of Science Degree in Aromatherapy
Students will need to complete a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution to be admitted to the master's program. This program can be used by medical professionals to add knowledge of aromatherapy to their existing practice. It may include online classes and a master's capstone project. Some classes include:
- Aromatherapy science
- Integrative pathophysiology
- Stress management and emotional health
- Wellness coaching and communication skills
Job Outlook and Salary Information
Many graduates of an integrative health studies degree program often work in retail as promoters and demonstrators of aromatherapy products. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (www.bls.gov), the employment of demonstrators and product promoters is expected to increase by 3% for the period 2019 to 2029. The mean annual salary of demonstrators and promoters, also reported by the BLS, was $35,320 in 2019.
Continuing Education Information
There is no centralized governing body that offers certification to those graduates of an integrative health studies program who wish to be practicing aromatherapists. The National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists (NAHA) is a non-profit organization that is making steps towards standardizing educational curriculums and certification, but it is still in its beginning stages as a non-profit.
Students interested in aromatherapy will find few master's programs in the field, but they can also look into bachelor's programs in integrative health that include aromatherapy in the curriculum.
