Taking the GED Test in South Carolina
In South Carolina, the GED test is available in English and Spanish. The GED test takes approximately seven and a half hours to complete and consists of multiple-choice questions, reading tasks, short answer, and extended response questions. The test can't be taken online, although you may register for the exam at www.GED.com. The GED test is composed of four separate subject areas:
- Science
- Social studies
- Mathematical reasoning
- Reasoning through language arts
Eligibility Requirements
To take the GED test in South Carolina if you're under 19, you must provide an official withdrawal form from the high school you previously attended. South Carolina requires test-takers be residents of the state. If you're currently enrolled in an alternative high school program in South Carolina, you're not eligible to take the GED test, but you can test if you're completing an adult education program. Before taking the exam, you must present a government-issued photo ID. Other eligibility requirements, as stated by the South Carolina State Department of Education, include:
- You should typically be at least 17 (you might test at 16 under certain circumstances)
- You shouldn't be enrolled in a traditional high school
- You shouldn't have a high school diploma

Passing the GED Test
The GED test measures your academic ability in comparison to recent high school graduates. To pass, test-takers need a minimum score of 150 on each of the four subject area tests.
Retesting Information
In South Carolina, individuals are allowed to take each subject area test 3 times without waiting. After the third attempt, a 60-day waiting period is applied.
