Alameda Adult School's Educational Programs
Alameda Adult School, part of the Alameda School District, provides educational opportunities, workforce skills development and personal enrichment classes to adult students. Programs include English as a Second Language (ESL), high school diploma programs, general educational development (GED) classes, and family literacy courses.
English as a Second Language Program
ESL courses are offered at various competency levels, ranging from beginning-literacy level all the way up to intermediate-high level and advanced-bridge. Most classes are either offered in the morning, from 9 am - 12 noon, or in the evening from 6 - 9 pm.
High School Diploma/GED Prep Class
Adult students with some high school credits can complete their diploma at the Alameda Adult School. Students can take courses in literacy, English, social studies, science, general math, and algebra. Students can earn additional elective credits through the community based work experience program.
Alameda Adult School hosts HiSET testing for students in reading and writing, math, science, and social studies. Students must register for the test prior to taking it, and there is a fee of $120. Current students will be charged $70 to register.
Family Literacy Course
Alameda offers a parent education class for parents who have children enrolled in the Alameda Unified School District. In order for parents to attend the class, they must at least possess a level of beginning-low to intermediate-low in ESL, according to the Adult School's guidelines.
Alameda City Adult Classes
Alameda city fathers have put together adult classes in three areas: enrichment, fitness and parenting. The classes may be held in several of the public schools or churches around the city. The Alameda Recreation and Park Department has links to the Ed2Go online instruction center with a large variety of academic programs offered online and fee only.

Fresh ingredients and healthy cooking is the rage with these fee only courses offered at Leydecker Park. Students learn to cook fresh, organic and on the cheap or to use exotic spices and herbs learning how to prepare Indian cuisine.

Adults needing fitness and wellness work can find just what they need with classes in gentle yoga stretching and low impact cardio classes. These classes are taught by the same instructor and are offered at a variety of times to fit any student's schedule.
Smart and Effective Parenting
The city also sponsors parenting classes including Smart and Effective Parenting taught by a PhD instructor. This course is for local parents who are feeling overwhelmed and stressed. Learn what it takes to remain calm and less reactive to parenting situations.
College of Alameda
The two year College of Alameda offers associate's degrees and certifications in a variety of areas. The Career Technical and Occupational courses are tied directly to the industry needs of the community for students looking to join the realm of the employed as soon as possible.
The dental assisting program is for students with people skills looking for a stable career. They will study dental care and oral health. Upon finishing the classes, students will receive a certificate of completion which will qualify them to take the Certification Examination of the Dental Assisting National Board and others within the state of California.
Aviation Maintenance Technology
AMT is an evening program located at the extension location near the Oakland International Airport. The coursework takes two years to complete and upon finishing students are awarded a Certificate of Achievement that makes them eligible to complete the requirements for an A.S.degree and certain FAA licenses.
The College of Alameda Business and Accounting Department has an AA in Accounting and an AS-T in Business Administration requiring 60 units for transfer to CSU. They also offer certificates of achievement (accounting) and proficiency (small business administration and office administration for the logistics industry).
