School Selection Criteria

Students should consider the following when looking for acupressure schools:

  • Students who choose to study acupressure within a broader massage therapy program should check to see if the program provides adequate preparation for the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx).
  • Students who are looking for a broader education may want to find out if other types of massage or complementary medical treatments are covered within the program or in other courses offered by the school.
  • It can be helpful to find out about on-site and off-campus training opportunities in acupressure that are facilitated by the school.
  • Students who work full-time may want to look for schools that offer courses on the weekends.

Certificate Programs

Acupressure-focused certificate programs provide an overview of how massage trigger points can be used to reduce stress, promote emotional balance and improve a patient's physical health. Some programs provide hands-on acupressure training through case studies and/or apprenticeships. Often, these programs are available on weekends in order to accommodate the needs of working professionals.

Alternatively, students may study acupressure within a broader massage therapist or holistic health certificate program. In these programs, students learn about acupressure alongside other topics in traditional Chinese medicine, such as herbology, acupuncture and qi-gong, or other massage modalities, such as Swedish massage, sports massage and deep tissue massage. Some also include business-related coursework for aspiring holistic health professionals.

Students who are looking for an acupressure program have a few schools to choose from. When choosing between programs, students should make sure that the course curriculum aligns with their academic interests and professional goals.
